MMP (Modified Maquet Procedure)
What is the Modified Maquet Procedure (MMP), and how is it different from other cruciate surgeries?
MMP is a type of tibial tuberosity advancement (TTA) surgery for dogs with a torn cranial cruciate ligament. It moves the front of the shin bone forward so the knee stays stable without the ligament. Unlike the original TTA, which uses a plate and fork, MMP holds the bone in place with a single titanium foam wedge that your dog's bone grows into as it heals.
Source: Journal of the American Animal Hospital Association, Modified Maquet Procedure case series
How well does MMP work for dogs?
Published results are encouraging. In the first clinical case series, 77% of 26 dogs had returned to full function 6 to 11 months after surgery. A 2021 force-plate gait study of 35 dogs also concluded that MMP is an effective way to stabilize the knee. Most of the research so far comes from smaller studies, so our veterinarians will talk through what to expect for your dog specifically.

What is recovery like after MMP surgery?
Recovery takes several weeks of restricted activity: short leash walks only, no running, jumping or rough play, and help on stairs and slick floors. You'll give pain medication at home, and we'll schedule rechecks and follow-up X-rays to confirm the bone is healing around the implant. Questions during recovery? Call us at (541) 688-5521.
Is my dog a good candidate for MMP?
It depends on your dog's size, knee anatomy, overall health and the extent of the injury. We'll start with an orthopedic exam and digital X-rays, then explain whether MMP is the best option or whether another approach would suit your dog better.

What happens during a laser therapy session?

Acupuncture
What is veterinary acupuncture?
Acupuncture involves placing very thin needles at specific points on the body to stimulate nerves, improve blood flow and trigger the release of the body's own pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory substances. It uses no medication and can be combined with most traditional and alternative treatments.
Does acupuncture hurt my pet?
Most pets are comfortable during acupuncture, and some fall asleep during their session. When a needle reaches an acupuncture point, a pet may feel a local muscle twitch or a heavy, tingling sensation. Sessions take place in a quiet area of our hospital, and their length depends on your pet's condition.
What does the research say about acupuncture for pets?
The evidence is mixed, and we want you to have the full picture. A 2024 evidence review found moderate support for acupuncture alongside medical treatment to help dogs recover from intervertebral disc disease. Another 2024 review found there isn't enough evidence to use acupuncture as the only treatment for chronic pain. That's why we use it alongside other therapies, not instead of them.
Can acupuncture be combined with my pet's other treatments?
Yes. Acupuncture can be used together with medications, laser therapy, chiropractic care and other treatments. Our veterinarians will look at your pet's whole treatment plan and let you know whether acupuncture is a good addition.

Nutrition
Why does my veterinarian ask about my pet's diet at every visit?
The World Small Animal Veterinary Association recommends treating nutrition as the fifth vital assessment, alongside temperature, pulse, breathing and pain, and checking it on every pet at every visit. A quick conversation about what, how much and how often your pet eats helps us catch weight changes and diet-related problems early.

How can I tell if my pet is at a healthy weight?
We use a body condition score, a hands-on check of your pet's fat cover, along with their weight. In general, you should be able to feel your pet's ribs easily under a thin layer of fat and see a waist from above. At each visit, we'll score your pet and show you what to look for at home.
Do puppies, seniors and large breeds need different food?
Yes. Every pet's nutritional needs are different, based on age, breed, health conditions and lifestyle. Puppies need more calories than seniors, and giant breeds such as Great Danes and mastiffs have unique needs. Our veterinarians will recommend a food that fits your pet's stage of life.
Can you recommend a diet for my pet's medical condition?
Yes. Some conditions, such as kidney disease, are best managed with a specially formulated prescription diet. Our veterinarians can recommend the right food and help you transition to it, and you can order many diets through our online pharmacy. Have questions about what your pet is eating? Call us at (541) 688-5521.

Pharmacy
What does your in-house pharmacy carry?
Our onsite pharmacy carries flea, tick and heartworm preventatives and medications for intestinal parasites, plus dental products, food, hip and joint medications, allergy remedies, supplements for healthy skin and coat, and training and behavior aids.
Can I order my pet's medications online?
Yes. Our online pharmacy connects to your pet's records at our clinic, so you can order medications and food directly and receive them in a few days, without calling for a written prescription or mailing it in.
Will you write a prescription for an outside pharmacy?
Yes, we support your right to choose where you fill your pet's medications. We provide hard-copy written prescriptions on security paper, which you pick up at our hospital and mail or hand-deliver to the pharmacy of your choice.
Is it safe to buy pet medications online?
It can be, if you use a legitimate pharmacy. The FDA advises buying only from pharmacies that require a prescription from your veterinarian, are licensed, and have a pharmacist you can contact. Be cautious of sites that sell prescription drugs without a prescription or offer to “evaluate” your pet through an online form.
