Does Pet Acupuncture Hurt?
No! Proper acupuncture technique may cause a contraction of local muscles and a deep, heavy tingling sensation when the needle enters the acupuncture point. Over 95% of patients are comfortable with acupuncture therapy, and some animals even fall asleep during sessions. This virtually painless process relaxes muscle tissue and oxygenates the surrounding area, promoting faster healing.
Benefits and Safety
This 3000-year-old Chinese practice is effective for treating numerous disorders, including:
- Neurologic and soft tissue pain
- Arthritis
- Allergies
- Gastrointestinal issues
- Musculoskeletal systemic problems
- Skin conditions
- Otitis
Acupuncture is one of the safest veterinary treatments available. Veterinary acupuncture eliminates the need for pharmaceuticals, thereby avoiding the risk of overdose and adverse reactions, and can be used in conjunction with most other traditional and alternative treatments.

Acupuncture: Frequently Asked Questions
What is veterinary acupuncture?
Acupuncture involves placing very thin needles at specific points on the body to stimulate nerves, improve blood flow and trigger the release of the body's own pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory substances. It uses no medication and can be combined with most traditional and alternative treatments.
Does acupuncture hurt my pet?
Most pets are comfortable during acupuncture, and some fall asleep during their session. When a needle reaches an acupuncture point, a pet may feel a local muscle twitch or a heavy, tingling sensation. Sessions take place in a quiet area of our hospital, and their length depends on your pet's condition.
What does the research say about acupuncture for pets?
The evidence is mixed, and we want you to have the full picture. A 2024 evidence review found moderate support for acupuncture alongside medical treatment to help dogs recover from intervertebral disc disease. Another 2024 review found there isn't enough evidence to use acupuncture as the only treatment for chronic pain. That's why we use it alongside other therapies, not instead of them.
Can acupuncture be combined with my pet's other treatments?
Yes. Acupuncture can be used together with medications, laser therapy, chiropractic care and other treatments. Our veterinarians will look at your pet's whole treatment plan and let you know whether acupuncture is a good addition.
