Understanding MMP
A torn cranial cruciate ligament (the dog version of a torn ACL) is one of the most common reasons dogs limp on a back leg. Without that ligament, the shin bone slides forward every time your dog puts weight on the leg, which causes pain, inflammation and, over time, arthritis.
MMP is a modern version of the tibial tuberosity advancement surgery. Instead of trying to replace the ligament, the surgeon moves the front of the shin bone forward so the knee stays stable without it. A small titanium foam wedge holds the bone in its new position, and its porous structure lets your dog's own bone grow into it as it heals. Dr. Jon Williams and Dr. Jessie Sinkowski are both certified to perform MMP here at Four Corners.

What to Expect During MMP Surgery
From the first exam to the last recheck, our team walks you through each step and answers your questions along the way.
Orthopedic Exam and X-rays
We start by examining your dog's knee for instability and taking digital radiographs. The X-rays confirm the injury and let us plan the exact size and position of the implant for your dog's anatomy.
Safe Anesthesia
Before surgery, pre-anesthetic bloodwork checks that your dog is healthy enough for anesthesia. During the procedure, our team monitors heart rate, breathing, blood pressure and temperature the whole time, and we give pain medication before, during and after surgery.
Going Home and Recovery
Most of the healing happens at home. We'll send you home with pain medication, clear instructions for restricted, leash-only activity, and a schedule for rechecks and follow-up X-rays so we can confirm the bone is healing around the implant.

Why Treating a Torn Cruciate Ligament Matters
A torn cruciate ligament doesn't heal on its own. The longer the knee stays unstable, the more cartilage wears down and the more arthritis develops. Surgery like MMP stabilizes the joint so your dog can use the leg normally again.
Relieve Pain
Stabilizing the knee stops the painful sliding motion that happens with every step.
Slow Arthritis
A stable joint wears down far less than an unstable one, which helps protect your dog's mobility as they age.
Get Back to Normal Life
After recovery, most dogs return to walks, play and the activities they love.
Signs Your Dog May Have a Torn Cruciate Ligament
- Sudden limping on a back leg, often after running or jumping
- Sitting with one back leg stuck out to the side
- Trouble getting up, jumping into the car or climbing stairs
- Swelling or thickening on the inside of the knee
- Toe-touching or holding the leg up after exercise
If you notice any of these signs, schedule an exam. You can also use our dog chronic pain checklist to note what you're seeing at home.

MMP (Modified Maquet Procedure): Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Modified Maquet Procedure (MMP), and how is it different from other cruciate surgeries?
MMP is a type of tibial tuberosity advancement (TTA) surgery for dogs with a torn cranial cruciate ligament. It moves the front of the shin bone forward so the knee stays stable without the ligament. Unlike the original TTA, which uses a plate and fork, MMP holds the bone in place with a single titanium foam wedge that your dog's bone grows into as it heals.

How well does MMP work for dogs?
Published results are encouraging. In the first clinical case series, 77% of 26 dogs had returned to full function 6 to 11 months after surgery. A 2021 force-plate gait study of 35 dogs also concluded that MMP is an effective way to stabilize the knee. Most of the research so far comes from smaller studies, so our veterinarians will talk through what to expect for your dog specifically.

What is recovery like after MMP surgery?
Recovery takes several weeks of restricted activity: short leash walks only, no running, jumping or rough play, and help on stairs and slick floors. You'll give pain medication at home, and we'll schedule rechecks and follow-up X-rays to confirm the bone is healing around the implant. Questions during recovery? Call us at (541) 688-5521.
Is my dog a good candidate for MMP?
It depends on your dog's size, knee anatomy, overall health and the extent of the injury. We'll start with an orthopedic exam and digital X-rays, then explain whether MMP is the best option or whether another approach would suit your dog better.
