Nutrition in Eugene, OR
Ever heard the expression that “you are what you eat”? Well the same is true for our pets!
A nutrition-rich diet is your pet’s first line of defense and a cornerstone of preventive care. Proper daily nutrition will go a long way in keeping your pet healthy by bolstering the immune system and supporting normal development in younger animals.

Every pet’s nutritional needs are different, based on age, breed, health conditions and lifestyle factors. For example, giant breeds such as Great Danes, mastiffs and giant schnauzers have unique needs that can’t always be met by commercial dog foods. Puppies require more calories than seniors, so your vet will recommend specially formulated foods for them and for animals who have certain health conditions, such as kidney disease.
At Four Corners Veterinary Clinic, our veterinarians and staff can take the guesswork out of feeding your pets by advising you about what’s right for your animal.

Nutrition: Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my veterinarian ask about my pet's diet at every visit?
The World Small Animal Veterinary Association recommends treating nutrition as the fifth vital assessment, alongside temperature, pulse, breathing and pain, and checking it on every pet at every visit. A quick conversation about what, how much and how often your pet eats helps us catch weight changes and diet-related problems early.

How can I tell if my pet is at a healthy weight?
We use a body condition score, a hands-on check of your pet's fat cover, along with their weight. In general, you should be able to feel your pet's ribs easily under a thin layer of fat and see a waist from above. At each visit, we'll score your pet and show you what to look for at home.
Do puppies, seniors and large breeds need different food?
Yes. Every pet's nutritional needs are different, based on age, breed, health conditions and lifestyle. Puppies need more calories than seniors, and giant breeds such as Great Danes and mastiffs have unique needs. Our veterinarians will recommend a food that fits your pet's stage of life.
Can you recommend a diet for my pet's medical condition?
Yes. Some conditions, such as kidney disease, are best managed with a specially formulated prescription diet. Our veterinarians can recommend the right food and help you transition to it, and you can order many diets through our online pharmacy. Have questions about what your pet is eating?
